NEW BUILD
SUSTAINABLE Hempcrete
Winston Hills

Date Completed:

2023

Location:

Winston Hills NSW

Project Type:

Sustainable Building

The Brief:

To create a healthy and sustainable home using hempcrete throughout the structure in conjunction with other recycled/low carbon products where applicable.

The Result:

A high quality build using sustainable building practices including Hempcrete as the main component for the wall structures. Low carbon ‘Envisia’ concrete was used for the concrete slabs and recycled timber used for stair handrails.

The hempcrete walls are a mix of Hemp shiv(plant fibres) and lime, sand and water making an extremely sustainable and healthy building product. This then gets finished with a lime render to the exterior surface and the clients decided on a natural clay render for the majority of the interior finishes with one wall being left exposed Hemp as a feature. These then get sealed with a mineral silicate sealer.

There was a high focus on the thermal performance of the build right from the design and with the use of large water tanks, grey water treatment, solar and batteries, so far they are almost completely self sufficient(will be able to update on some specifics once they collect enough data)

Other key areas of interest are the recycled hardwood used for stair handrail and pergola frames which came from the existing house that was demolished from the block a few years earlier, this was planed and sanded down onsite to suit the applications.
